Best Sound at ISE: Procella, Trinnov, Artnovion, SIM2

If you didn’t make it to ISE 2017 this year, you missed perhaps the best Procella demo yet! Once again, the Procella and Trinnov combination delivered world-class immersive audio performance to critical listeners, over the four days of the show.

We carefully planned the system well in advance of the show and conducted an off-site audio dress rehearsal with the partners in January. As a result, in our custom-built demo theatre, we achieved the Procella Effect: incredibly powerful and dynamic immersive sound, with visitors praising, among other things, exceptional dialog intelligibility and a formidable low end. By the end of the first day, our booth had become a destination for show attendees, and we played to full houses with standing room only for virtually every demonstration.

The 11.3.10 Atmos/Auro-3D/DTS:X demo system consisted of:
P815 L/C/R channels, biamplified by Procella DA06DSP power amps
P8 High L/C/R channels on the baffle wall over the screen
P6V wide channels (one left, one right)
P6 side surrounds (two left side, two right side)
P6 back surrounds (one left, one right)
P5 height channels (three left, three right in an Atmos configuration)
P5 top channel
V18 Bass Engine subwoofer, driven by two Procella DA07 power amps
P15 subwoofers (one left wall, one right wall, driven by Procella DA05DSP power amps)
Trinnov Altitude32 AL-1624 24-channel processor
Trinnov Amplitude8 power amplifiers (two, used for all channels not driven by the Procella amplifiers)
Artnovion absorbers and diffusors for room treatment on all walls and ceiling
SIM2 NERO 4 4K HDR projector
Screen Innovations acoustically transparent screen

Ranging from the P5 to the P860, we also displayed the entire Procella Audio lineup of loudspeakers for show visitors to see. Many thanks to our booth partners Trinnov Audio, Artnovion, and SIM2. Special thanks go to Ingemar Ohlsson of Audio Data Lab in Stockholm, who provided the room’s acoustical design. If you missed this year’s show, you’ll get another chance at ISE in Amsterdam in 2018. Hope to see you then!

Procella, Trinnov and Artnovion Partner for ISE’s Most Compelling Immersive Audio Demo: 11.3.10 Channel System in Booth 5-U72

For ISE’s most powerful demo, we’ve brought together the global leaders in their respective product categories, With partners Trinnov Audio and Artnovion, we’re constructing a custom-designed cinema to showcase the most advanced immersive audio system at the show – a full 11.3.10 channel system capable of Dolby Atmos®, Auro-3D®, and DTS:X® playback.

“Once again, we are partnering with Trinnov Audio and Artnovion to present a true world-class home cinema immersive audio experience to a global audience of ISE show attendees,” stated Gerben Van Duyl, founding partner of Procella Audio. “All three firms have invested a great deal of time in advance to ensure that this year’s demo system will be truly exceptional, and we encourage all ISE attendees to experience what will undoubtedly be the most compelling audio presentation at the show.”

To ensure a proper acoustical environment for a playback system of this level, we turned to one of Sweden’s leading acoustical designers, our good friend Ingemar Ohlsson of Audio Data Lab in Stockholm. Ohlsson was assisted by the engineering team of Artnovion, who also designed and provided the room’s acoustical treatments. To complete the presentation, brilliant and razor sharp 4K UHD images will be provided by SIM2’s new NERO4 projector.

Thanks to the number of high-performance Procella loudspeakers used and the high spatial resolution provided by the superior rendering capabilities of the Trinnov Altitude32, this system’s performance rivals the immersive qualities of the finest cinemas and dubbing stages. Conventional Atmos processors are limited to rendering only 12 discrete playback channel, while the Altitude32 is capable of up to 32 discrete channels. In the ISE system, 22 playback channels and a total of 24 Procella loudspeakers will be used, including L/C/Rs, three front height channels, two wide channels, seven ceiling-mounted height speakers, six surrounds, and four subwoofers.

Making its ISE debut is the massive dual-18 inch V18 Bass Engine subwoofer, capable of producing an astonishing continuous output of 137 dB. It’s 100Kg sealed-box enclosure utilizes Procella’s unique V-Loaded configuration to produce driver coupling and high compression loading for lower distortion and improved transient response. Additional P15 subwoofers will be used for balancing.

Baffle-wall mounted Procella P815 speakers will be used for the left, center and right channels, powered by Procella DA-06DSP power amplifiers. Three P8s, driven by Procella DA-05DSP amps, will be used for the high left, center, and right channels. Trinnov Amplitude8 power amps will drive the P6V wide channels, six P6 surrounds, and 7 P5 height channels.

Participating in the show for Procella are partners Anders Uggelberg, Chuck Back, and Gerben Van Duyl, who will be joined by the newest member of the Procella team. Jan Anderson. The show runs from Tuesday, February 7 through Friday, February 10. We hope to see you there!

The V18 Bass Engine Subwoofer Is Here!

It’s the new flagship! The V18 dual 18 inch subwoofer sets the new standard for high-output large room subs, with even greater output and bass extension than the mighty P18. This massive subwoofer has earned the distinction of being called The Bass Engine.

Ready for some numbers? The V18 produces continuous output up to 137 dB, with peak output of 143 dB. Its sealed-box design utilizes Procella’s unique V-Loaded driver configuration, with amplification provided, of course, by Procella’s DA06-DSP power amplifier. Its 1W/1m sensitivity is 105 dB, and its power handling of 2 x 1,400W continuous and 2 x 2,800W peak gives the V18 an extremely high output capability. Its low frequency extension to a –3 dB point of 18 Hz enables it to produce massive output at subsonic frequencies. Its hand-made Neodymium subwoofer drivers have 4 inch voice coils and are produced for Procella by one of Italy’s top professional audio driver manufacturers, with each 8 ohm driver fed directly from an amplifier channel through gold-plated binding post inputs. Get the complete tech specs here

In the V-Loaded configuration, which was first made available in Procella’s P860 speaker and V6 subwoofer, the drivers are mounted facing each other, angled at about 12 degrees to form a shape like the letter V. In playback, this produces coupling and a high compression loading of the drivers, resulting in lower distortion, improved transient response, and reduced cone excursion at high SPL.

Procella founding director and V18 designer Anders Uggelberg commented, “While Procella has always produced extremely high output subwoofers that include the reference P18, there are large rooms and listeners with requirements for low frequency reproduction at even higher playback levels. The V18 was produced to address those needs. We increased the enclosure volume and added our V-Loaded configuration to enable the V18 to achieve higher sensitivity, 3 dB higher maximum SPL, and some 3dB more power at very low frequencies.”

And even better news? The V18 is in production and shipping now.

Best Demo at ISE: Our 11.4.11 Atmos/Auro-3D/DTS:X Theater

If you weren’t able to make it to ISE, you missed a powerfully immersive demo! Praised by visitors as the best-sounding 3D Audio demo at the show, the Procella/Trinnov/Artnovion/Image system had 11 base channels, 11 height channels, and 4 subwoofers, a channel count far beyond that of other systems at the show. Its combination of imaging and immersion was compelling, making clear the strengths of each 3D audio format.

In the photo nearby, you can see part of the array of speakers mounted on the four meter high ceiling: for Atmos, two left side and two right side speakers, and for Auro-3D, two speakers for the Voice of God channel. Not shown are the two additional Atmos speakers and the front left, center and right height channels for the Auro-3D format.

Our ability to demonstrate such an advanced system was based on our show partnership with Trinnov Audio and their mighty Altitude 32 processor. In addition to impeccable sound quality, the Altitude enabled us to make demonstrations with content encoded in all three immersive formats: Atmos, Auro-3D, and DTS:X.

Thanks to co-exhibitor Artnovion of Portugal, our demo room was both attractive and well treated acoustically. You can see some of their acoustical panels in the above photo (note that the red diffusers appear orange in the photo because of the flash).

Back to Procella, we showed the full lineup outside the demo room, including a sneak preview of the slimline version of the P5 speaker, which is shown here. Ideal next to flat panel displays and screens, we’re tentatively looking at having this speaker later in the year.

With record attendance of over 65,000, the show floor was the busiest ever, and our presentation was made to full houses on the first three days and much of the fourth day. For more on the show, see our rAVe videos describing the 11.4.11 demo system and the Procella lineup.

Our active demo will consist of 3 full-range P815 main channel speakers, a P18 dual 18-inch active subwoofer, three P12 active subwoofers as balancing subs, and 19 P5 speakers – 8 as surround/wide channels, and 11 as overhead channels. When used with the Trinnov Altitude processor, this layout is optimized for playback of all three immersive formats: Dolby Atmos, Auro-3D, and DTS:X. We’ll also have a sneak preview of new models based on the popular P5 speaker. Hope to see you in Amsterdam!

Procella 11.4.6 Atmos Demo System at ISE 2015

In a sound room designed and constructed by Procella’s Dutch distributor Cosento, Procella showcased perhaps the most advanced audio system at the show – a full Dolby Atmos® audio playback system. The Atmos demos captivated the audience, with great imaging specificity around the room and over listeners heads, including highly effective pans moving throughout the listening space.

Procella’s active 11.4.6 channel system used 21 Procella loudspeakers. In addition to the standard 7.1 setup, the system included six ceiling-mounted overhead speakers, two front wide speakers, a second set of side surround speakers, and a total of four active subwoofers.

Procella P28 speakers mounted in a baffle wall were used for the left, center and right channels, and the new Procella P5 speaker was used for all 14 surround and overhead channels. A single P18 active subwoofer was paired with three P12 active subs. The spectacular Trinnov Altitude 32 processor provided Dolby Atmos decoding and Trinnov Optimizer room correction, and all amplification was of course through Procella DA-2800 four-channel power amplifiers.

“After our very successful 9.2.4 channel Dolby Atmos demonstration at CEDIA Expo, we were excited to be able to take things to the next level with a 11.4.6 channel system,” said Gerben Van Duyl, founding partner of Procella Audio. “The reaction from EMEA integrators and other visitors was quite enthusiastic, with many of them hearing Dolby Atmos with greater than 16 playback channels for the first time. Hearing Atmos with the full resolution and cinema impact of Procella Audio loudspeakers was a powerful demonstration of what we mean by ‘The Procella Effect’.
